I played rugby with Patrick Fitzgerald

Yup. The federal prosecutor who indicted "Scooter" Libby, and whose face was all over the newspapers and TV today, played rugby in the late 80’s with my club, OMEX. He played in the back row at wing forward and #8. He was a solid B team player – pretty average athlete, with good skills and good understanding of the game. At the time, OMEX was one of the top ten teams in the Northeast, so he played a very good standard of rugby. Blood, mud, and beer.

       

He was an excellent guy and club member. Quite sociable and enjoyed a few beers. He played for at least four years, but as he gained responsibility in his federal attorney job in New York, we saw less and less of him. I probably haven’t spoken to him in fifteen years. I had a conversation this evening with an attorney and judge – Rich McCord - who also played at that time (good player; big second row). He’d seen Pat in Chicago over the summer and said his personality hadn’t changed.

       

I am happy to vouch for Fitzgerald – a straight shooter and upright guy. Maybe I should get a t-shirt saying "I Played Rugby with Patrick Fitzgerald".
