The final score on the stock market last year

For all the talk of "crisis", "meltdown", etc, etc, guess what? Stocks finished higher in the U.S., and in some foreign markets, substantially higher (Brazilian stocks, for example were up 73%).

The S & P 500 was up for the fifth year in a row. 3.5%, or 6.2% if you count dividends (and they definitely count!). Nasdaq up 9.8%. The market sector that took the biggest hit last year were financial stocks. The sector dropped almost 21%. To my mind, now's a good time to buy financial stocks!

Here's the financial round-ups from the Wall Street Journal, NY Times, and Washington Post. It looks like the word du jour is "turmoil".
