I'm impressed. hit the link for the whole (not very long) story
The remote track ... winds through desert and grasslands, climbing and descending constantly for its whole length. Chuck hiked the trail solo and carried all food, filtering water from streams and at least one “cow pond.” (He noted he could “still taste the cow” even after purification!) On the trek, Chuck battled blisters, vague trail spurs that took him off route, and wild, free-range steer not happy to see him in their grazing grounds along the way. Here son Stephen Regenold interviews his dad on the Maah Daah Hey experience.
My brother in law tried a wilderness hike with one of this friends. I think it was for 4-5 days. He is no boy scout. He didn't pack warm clothes, didn't have enough food and did not treat or did not properly treat his water. When he thankfully made it home, he spent the next three weeks on antibiotics. Wilderness camping is not all it is cracked up to be. In the words of the woman who lived next door to us, who lived to be 107, "the good old days were not so good!" She was born during the blizzard of 1886 and lived in the village before we had village water or electricity. A good time for her, as a kid, was ice skating over to Haverstraw, having a hot chocolate and ice skating back. One of her childhood chores was pumping water for the house each day. She thought modern conveniences were really great! I don't think you could have gotten her to go wilderness camping in a heartbeat! Have a nice weekend! Mary

I camped in the Badlands one time - no problem - the RV made all the difference.
