62 years ago this morning Germany launched it's surprise offensive, into the Ardennes forest on the German-Belgian border.
The result was the famous and horrible Battle of the Bulge, the biggest pitched battle ever fought by Americans. There were more then 80,000 American casualties, including 19,000 killed. More Americans (about 640,000) were involved and more killed than in any other battle in U.S. history.

It's worth reading the letters that were sent in by veterans after this program aired in 1994. Very moving just to read them.
