This was a huge commotion in Croton from about 5:30 onward yesterday. As I was returning from the gym rescue vehicles from Croton and Ossining were pouring into the south end of the Croton train station, where kayaks and canoes are normally launched from.
Later on, we turned on channel 12, which had amateur video of the five men who were looking for a place to put their zodiac rubber boat in the Croton river (this was, shall we say, an unsmart decision). They were well-equipped, but one of them still drowned.
Three volunteer firemen also had to be rescued, after their rubber rescue boat overturned - they were pulled out at the railway trestle at the end of the station parking area.
So, a horrendous tragedy - what were the boaters thinking?
1 killed after small boat capsizes in Croton River
Croton police divers set off in their own boat and managed to pluck four of the five victims from the river, with one immediately rushed to a local hospital. The fifth hung onto a tree limb until he was finally pulled to safety about two hours later. His condition was unclear, but authorites confirmed one of the victims died later.
I like the fact that you ask "What were they thinking". It goes right to the heart of the matter. After all, they didn't end up there by chance.
