An amusing column in yesterday's online WSJ.
Golden Age for Democrats. Three septuagenarians may run in 2020.
“Joe Biden leads the way for Democrats with 31% to 24% for Bernie Sanders, and 16% for Elizabeth Warren,” according to Public Policy Polling. Also, “57% of Democrats say they want their candidate to be under the age of 60, and 77% say they want their candidate to be under the age of 70. Only 8% actually want a candidate who’s in their [sic] 70s.”
That’s not entirely consistent, is it? Front-runner Biden will be 77 as of Election Day 2020. Sanders will be 79, and even the comparatively youthful Warren will be 71. If the Republicans are the Grand Old Party, the Democrats must be the Great-Grand Old Party.
Actually the superannuation of the Democrats is something new. Hillary Clinton, 69, this year became the oldest Democrat ever nominated to the presidency—and she is younger by 16 months than President-elect Trump.
Obama - here's his real legacy - the Republicans should pay for his statue -
One reason there are so few young Democratic officeholders is that the Obama era has reduced the number of Democratic officeholders of all ages. In 2009 Democrats held as many as 258 seats in the House, 60 in the Senate, and 29 governorships. Once this year’s winners have been seated, those numbers will be 194, 48 and 16 respectively.
