This is a pretty accurate explanation of how a short sale, and then a short squeeze works. Left out is the point that the short seller (hedge fund) usually does this on 50% margin (borrows the money) which doubles his possible gain as well as the possible losses. you can be sure it wasn't just small investors who caused the short squeeze; the big hedege funds and institutions would have seen the opportunity and jumped in.
