From Issues & Insights - those are census bureau numbers.
"The numbers are truly eye-opening."
These sanctuary states, and the cities and counties around the country that have blindly followed suit, make it a policy not to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. That includes letting felons who have deportation orders out on bail rather than handing them over to ICE agents.
Tom, I know you like Trump, which is your right, but I didn’t think you had migrated to an “opinion-as-fact” world. Disappointing. From 1/1/21 to 1/1/25, CA’s population did not decrease at all. It increased by 387,000 residents.

Yes Greg I love Trump - that is why I voted for theresa bonopartis for President in the last election.
Population decline was not the issue - the issue was net domestic migration - I asked three AI programs the following - and they all confirmed the "fact"
"what has been California's net migration from 2020-2024"
Here is an artificial intelligence answer thru google.
From 2020 to 2024, California experienced a net loss of residents due to domestic migration, with 1.46 million more people leaving for other states than moving in. However, this was offset by a significant influx of international migrants, with 934,000 more people moving to California from other countries than leaving. This resulted in a complex net migration pattern where the state lost population overall due to the pandemic but has seen a recent rebound in 2024.
From chatgpt (free version)
Cumulative Total: April 2020 – July 2024
Net Domestic Migration: approx. –1.46 million
Net International Migration: approx. +934,000

So overall, California experienced a net migration loss of roughly –526,000 over the four‑plus years.
From perplexityAI the paid version -
Between 2020 and 2024, California experienced significant population shifts driven by both domestic and international migration. The state saw a large loss in net domestic migration—meaning more people moved out to other U.S. states than moved in—while international migration partially offset these losses.
Net Domestic Migration (2020–2024)
California lost approximately 1.46 million residents to net domestic migration over this period, meaning 1.46 million more people left California for other states than moved in from other states
The outflow peaked during the pandemic but began to slow in 2023 and 2024, with the annual net domestic migration loss dropping to below 200,000 by 2024—about one-sixth of the 2021 total.
Please show me where the AI programs got it wrong - they are not perfect which is why I checked three of them.

We all know you like Trump, Tom. It’s OK. You can say it out loud. You made the association, by posting what you did, that the outmigration in California was based on it being a sanctuary state. That’s misleading, and you know it. One of the central reasons for the outmigration is the high cost of housing in CA, especially for low, moderate and median income families. But that fact doesn’t get the kind of inflammatory headline you associated with. Despite all its challenges, CA still added population.
